Gabe returned home and went in search of his mother. He found her standing in the middle of her kitchen. “What are you doing?” He frowned.

She turned around and gave him a little laugh. “I… I don’t know. I came in here for some reason, but I can’t for the life of me remember why.” She shrugged and walked over to the stove. “I’ll put a kettle on. Why don’t you sit and we’ll have a cup of tea.”

He settled into a chair at the kitchen table and watched as she efficiently bustled around the kitchen. She brought over a mug of tea for him, and hers in one of her beloved china teacups, and settled in the chair across from him.

“So you were gone longer than I thought with your errands.” She blew on her tea.

“I stopped by Lizzie’s shop and helped her for a while. She’s going through a rough time right now. Her best friend’s husband was killed. I guess Lizzie was up most of the night in the hospital with her friend. Rachel, that’s her name. Rachel took a bad fall when she heard the news.”

“Oh, that’s terrible.”

He nodded as he dunked his tea bag up and down in his mug. “It is. And I guess Rachel just found out she’s pregnant, too. Just a really bad situation. So I offered to help Lizzie pack up her house tomorrow. She looks exhausted.”

“That’s a good idea. I’ll come and help, too.”

“You sure?”

“Of course, I am. Don’t start treating me like an old lady just because I had a momentary lapse of memory.”

“Yes, ma’am.” He knew better than to argue with his mother.
